Welcome Visitors!
Thank you for visiting the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Web site. If you would like to discover more, we invite you to join us for Sunday morning worship or for Fellowship Dinner, classes, Youth Group, and/or choir practice on Wednesday evenings.
What to expect
FCC offers Sunday worship services beginning at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday school for all ages begins at 9:30 a.m.
Parking
Parking is available at the Berryhill Street entrance and at the Taylor Road entrance to FCC. When you enter the church building at either entrance, you will enter into the Great Hall, the long hallway that connects the two entrances and leads to the education wing, the nursery, the Sanctuary, and the church offices.
Handicap Parking
Handicap parking is available at both entrances as indicated above.
Nursery Available
A fully-staffed nursery serves young children from infants to age 4. The nursery provides the parent or guardian with a beeper that will be used if you are needed. The nursery is located in the middle of the Great Hall.
What to wear
The focus is not on what you wear; we want you to be comfortable and focused on worship. If you look around, you will see everything from business casual to suits to jeans, but the majority of our congregation dresses in business casual-wear.
- Men generally wear the 3-button polo-style shirts or button-down shirts and Dockers-style pants, especially in summertime. Some men do wear suits.
- Women generally wear business casual dresses, pants or skirts.
- Young people wear school clothes or church casual.
What to expect when you come in the door
You will be welcomed by one of our greeters, who will give you a bulletin and guide you to the worship service.
For your convenience, hearing aids and large-print hymnals are available. Please ask a greeter if you are in need of either of these items.
What type of worship service to expect
Our smaller 8:30 a.m. service includes a sermon, singing, prayers, and the Lord's Supper and is led by one of the pastors. The larger, traditional-style 10:30 a.m. service is served by a congregational member as worship leader and led by the pastors. Music will include hymns and songs sung together and led by our choir, in addition to the choral anthem or music offering.
The Lord’s Supper
The Lord's Supper is observed weekly in Disciples of Christ churches. Everyone is welcome to celebrate communion. At the 8:30 a.m. service, communion is served by intinction, offered by a minister and an elder. You are invited to come forward as you are able. You will be given a piece of bread, which you may then dip into the cup before you partake. At the 10:30 a.m. service, communion is usually served by our deacons and delivered to you as you remain in your seat. The deacon will pass you both the cup and the bread. You may partake of the bread as you wish; the congregation drinks of the cup together. We use grape juice to symbolize our wine.
Children's Blessing
At the 10:30 a.m. service each Sunday, children are invited to come forward for the Children's Blessing. Children gather on the front row of chairs and receive a blessing from a pastor before being escorted to Children’s Worship & Wonder (grades pre-K–2) or Following Jesus (grades 3–5) if desired. Children are always welcome to remain in worship.
Worship and Wonder and Following Jesus are worship experiences designed especially for our children ages 4 through fifth grade. Children ages 4 through grade 2 attend Worship and Wonder and children in grades 3–5 attend Following Jesus, which offers more age-appropriate themes. These programs are held in C-1 and C-2 on the Education Wing located to the left of the sanctuary. Here the children hear and see and experience the sacred stories and parables of God. This worship time is led by trained storytellers and greeters. The children not only learn the stories of God, but also have an opportunity to wonder about them as they create artwork, revisit stories of the past, or read the Bible passages about the stories. Parents or grandparents may pick up their children immediately after the adult worship service.
