Mission Ministries of First Christian Church

As a community of faith, one of the most important things we can do to show our commitment to Christ is to serve others in need.  At First Christian Church, we are dedicated to offering a variety of Community Ministries that provide valuable services for our church, community and world.  As you look at the various opportunities to participate in Mission Outreach that are listed below, we hope you will find an area in which you feel called to serve.  If we do not have the kind of outreach you want to be involved in, come and share your vision with us.  We are always looking for new ways to serve the Lord!

Food Pantry 
Responding to God's call to serve our community, First Christian has recently begun a new Food Panty.  Working in cooperation with the Montgomery Area Food Bank, we will distribute food to needy families on the third Wednesday of every month.  We invite persons of all ages and abilities to join us in this rewarding ministry.  For more information check out our calendar or contact us.

Ongoing Mission Ministries
At First Christian Church, we are committed to providing at least one Mission Project a month in which you can participate.  These mission projects are short term and cover a variety of services.  In the past we have sung at nursing homes, delivered food to needy families, provided financial and gift support for victims of fire, worked at a home for children of imprisoned mothers, provided books for inmate mothers to read on tape so their children will have a bed time story, supported the American Cancer Society, participated in Christmas in April and a whole host of other exciting ministries.  You can always check out what we are up to this month by visiting our church calendar.

Special Offerings   
Throughout the year, we provide opportunities for our congregation to support specialized ministries through special offerings.  These offerings are "free will offerings" and are always above and beyond the support of our operating budget.  Listed below are the specialized offerings we support every year.

Week of Compassion
This is our denomination's disaster relief ministry.  Wherever there are victims of flood, earthquake, tornado or other natural disasters, hunger, war or whatever else the case my be, Week of Compassion is there to provide support.  It is very important to note that out of every dollar you give to Week of Compassion over 96 cents of it go directly to aid needy people.  There are few, if any, organizations who are such incredible stewards of our gifts.  While we have a Sunday dedicated to this offering once a year, you may give to Week of Compassion any time simply by putting a note on your check or donation. Reconciliation Ministry
This is our denomination's ministry that focuses on ending the root causes of racism and bigotry in our society.  The Reconciliation Ministry of our church provides workshops for local churches seeking more understanding about others, scholarships for minority campers as well as  a variety of other vitally important ministries.  While we have a Sunday dedicated to this offering once a year, you may give to the Reconciliation Ministry any time by putting a note on your check or donation. Easter, Pentecost, Thanksgiving and Christmas Offerings
On these days, we provide our community with an opportunity to support the General Ministries of our Denomination through monetary gifts.  Money given to these offerings helps to support local, regional and global ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  From overseas missions to localcamping programs, this ministry is a vital part of our overall outreach efforts.

Percentage Giving      
The commitment to supporting ministry beyond our local congregation is so strong at First Christian Church that the first eleven percent (11%) of every dollar we receive through our weekly giving goes to support ministry outside this congregation.  This practice demonstrates our belief in the practice of serving others first.  In a sense, it is our congregation's tithe to the ministry of the universal church.

        As you can see, from our finances to our "hands on" outreach, we are a congregation dedicated to serving the Lord through all of gifts and talents.  We hope you will join us in our efforts to bring the Kingdom of God to this earth.
